Essential Things to Know in Unity: Render Pipelines, Optimization & Asset Management

1. Render Pipelines(latest)

  • URP (Universal Render Pipeline):
Best for mobile and web platforms due to better performance.

  • HDRP (High Definition Render Pipeline):
Commonly used for PC and high-end games that require advanced visuals.

Simple srp that uses neither of above is old and deprecated.

2. Project Version & Packages

  • Check the Unity Editor version before opening the project.

  • Review all packages used to avoid compatibility issues.

  • Ensure required packages are installed and supported.

3. Cinemachine

  • Confirm Cinemachine is installed and working.

  • Check virtual camera setup, priorities, and transitions.

  • Verify Follow and Look At targets.

4. Materials in Different Pipelines

  • Materials are pipeline-specific.

  • Use correct shaders for URP or HDRP.

  • Convert or recreate materials when switching pipelines.

5. Optimization

  • Reduce texture sizes and apply proper compression.

  • Use low-poly 3D models with fewer triangles and vertices.

  • Share materials and batch meshes to reduce camera draw calls and CPU load.

6. Runtime Asset Downloading

  • Use the Resources folder for small or simple projects.

  • Use Addressables for efficient runtime downloading, async loading, and better memory management.
